A demonstration against U.S. intervention in the Dominican Republic marked the visit of U.S. Ambassador-at-large Averell Harriman to Montevideo, Uruguay. Our film shows Harriman at a news conference, anti-American signs, broken windows in U.S.-owned businesses and crowds marching.
The demonstrations were similar to those in several other Latin American cities protesting U.S. policy in the Dominican Republic. Harriman is touring several Latin capitals explaining U.S. policy.
The Montevideo crowds chalked numerous slogans protesting U.S. involvement in the Dominican Republic on walls all over the city. They broke windows in American-owned companies such as Pan American Airways and All-American Cables.
Although large numbers of banner-carrying crowds marched through the city, police keep relatively good control and there was no widespread violence....
