  • Description

A SCHEME INITIATED BY JORDAN AND THE UNITED NATIONS LAST YEAR TO RECLAIM DESERT LAND FOR AGRICULTURAL PURPOSES WAS INSPECTED BY OFFICIALS OF THE FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ORGANISATION ON TUESDAY. LEADING THE DELEGATION WAS DR. ABDELRAZAK SIDKY, DIRECTOR OF THE ORGANISATION IN THE MIDDLE EAST.

THE SCHEME, IN THE ALJAFER DESERT IN SOUTH JORDAN, WAS STARTED AFTER AN UNUSUALLY DRY YEAR IN 1962. THE BEDOUIN POPULATION NEEDED MORE WELLS. SIXTEEN BORES WERE SUNK BY THE CENTRAL WATER AUTHORITY. FOURTEEN YIELDED WATER FROM A DEPTH OF ONLY 50 METRES (150 FEET).

THIS SUCCESSFUL VENTURE WAS FOLLOWED BY THE PRESENT SCHEME TO RECLAIM THE AREA AND SETTLE THE BEDOUINS ON FARMS. LAST YEAR THE SCHEME BEGAN WITH 10 ACRES (FOUR HECTARES) BUT WAS QUICKLY EXTENDED TO 250 ACRES (100 HECTARES). THE SOIL WAS RAPIDLY BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL AND DIVIDED INTO 18 FARM UNITS, SEPARATED BY STREETS. EACH UNIT WAS FED BY A SHALLOW CANAL BRINGING WATER FOR 18 HOURS A DAY. ALREADY 85 BEDOUIN FAMILIES ARE SETTLED THERE. AFTER SIX MONTHS OF TRAINING EACH FAMILY WILL RECEIVE LAND AND A HOUSE, AND WILL BE ORGANISED AS A CO-OPERATIVE WORKER.

BY THE END OF NEXT YEAR IT IS HOPED TO EXTEND THE PROJECT TO 2,250 ACRES (900 HECTARES). THE COST OF THE WORK IS SHARED BY JORDAN'S MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE AND THE UNITED NATIONS THROUGH THE FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ORGANISATION.
