  • Description

GHANA'S DEPUTY COMMISSIONER OF POLICE, MR. B.A. YAKUBU, HAS TOLD MINERS AT THE ASHANTI GOLDFIELDS AT OBUASI THAT THE BEST WEAPONS FOR SETTLING LABOUR DISPUTES WERE PERSUASION, COOL-HEARTEDNESS AND NEGOTIATION.

HE TOLD THE MEN - MANY OF THEM MOSLEMS FROM OTHER AFRICAN STATES - THAT HE HAD NOT MADE THE VISIT TO TALK TO A WORKERS' MEETING. HE DESCRIBED THE REASON FOR THE VISIT AS "THE NEED FOR A HEART-TO-HEART TALK."
FIREARMS AND CUTLASSES WERE NOT THE INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR SETTLING LABOUR DISPUTES. HE SAID THE EMPLOYEES MUST HELP THE GOVERNMENT AND THEIR EMPLOYER, INSTEAD OF ASKING FOR HELP THEMSELVES. THE FIRST DUTY OF AN EMPLOYEE WAS, HE SAID, TO SERVE HIS EMPLOYER.
