  • Description

A POWERFUL TIME BOMB EXPLOSION IN DUBLIN DURING THE NIGHT (0130 MARCH 8) BADLY DAMAGED THE 130-FOOT (40 METRES) NELSON PILLAR. THE STATUE AND ABOUT 20 FEET (7 METRES) OF THE COLUMN WERE BLASTED TO THE GROUND.

RAILINGS AROUND A PLATFORM ABOUT 100 FEET UP (30 METRES) WERE ALSO SEVERELY DAMAGED. DUBLIN POLICE SAY NOBODY WAS INJURED.

THE PILLAR BUILT IN 1808, AND A POPULAR ATTRACTION FOR TOURISTS WHO CLAIMED IT TO GET A PANORAMIC VIEW OF THE CITY, HAS BEEN A CENTRE OF CONTROVERSY AS A RELIC OF BRITISH DOMINATION EVER SINCE IT WAS PUT UP.

THE IRISH REPUBLICANS HAVE WAGED A CONSTANT CAMPAIGN TO HAVE IT REMOVED A WEEK AGO A PETROL BOMB WAS THROWN INTO THE BASEMENT OF THE DUBLIN HOME OF THE BRITISH MILITARY ATTACHE. IT CAUSED AN EXPLOSION AND A FIRE BUT NOBODY WAS THERE AT THE TIME.
