THE VESSEL WAS BEACHED NEAR NORTHFLEET, KENT AFTER BEING IN COLLISION WITH THE JAPANESE SHIP "YAMASHIRO MARU" - 10,500 TONS.

    THE BUSES WERE PART OF AN ORDER FOR 950 PLACED BY THE CUBAN GOVERNMENT WITH THE BRITISH FIRM OF LEYLANDS. THE DEAL SPARKED CONTROVERSY BETWEEN LONDON AND WASHINGTON WITH U.S. OFFICIALS EXPRESSING RESENTMENT THAT BRITISH SHOULD SUPPLY SUCH EQUIPMENT TO DR. CASTRO.

    COSTING GBP9,300 EACH, THE BUSES SEAT 45 WITH STANDING ROOM FOR MORE. THEY ARE PAINTED IN THE CUBAN NATIONAL COLOURS OF RED, GREEN AND WHITE.
