  • Description

Soviet civilian aircraft flow in to Rawalpindi-Islamabad Airport at the weekend to evacuate wives and children of Soviet diplomats resident in West Pakistan. The evacuation operation followed India's announcement of a bombing pause to enable foreign nationals to be flown out from Karathi, Rawalpindi and Dacca.

The arrival of the Soviet aircraft spared off a demonstration by people protesting at Soviet diplomatic support for India in the war against Pakistan. Pakistani troops guarding the airport restrained the demonstrators as the Soviet women and children hurried from their cars to the waiting aircraft. Today (13 Dec.) Pakistan apologised in Moscow for the stoning of embassy dependants at the airport.
