  • Description

Khmer Foreign Minister Long Boret, arriving back in Phnom Penh following a difficult diplomatic mission to the United Nations, had announced that he will be forming a new government at the request of President Lon Nol. It will replace the administration of Prime Minister In Tam, who resigned two weeks ago declaring that he was tired of politics.

Mr. Boret returned from him mission to the United Nations on Saturday (December 22). He had been enlisting support in the Khmer Government's struggle to retain U.N. recognition. Earlier this month, the General Assembly deferred for 10 months a motion to expel the Lon Nol government from the U.N. and admit representatives of the Government-in-Exile of Prince Sihanouk instead.

Khmer President Lon Nol had already declared that the new government, to be headed by Mr. Boret, must place great emphasis on foreign policy -- building up trade with foreign countries in order to improve the country's depleted foreign reserves.
