A battered Lotion taxi chugged sedately into busy Tokyo June 20 - after a gruelling 25,000-mile trip half-away ground the world. At the wheel boarded American Alfred Hobbs, who has spent the past three years honeymooning in the cab with his Danish-born wife, Jakobine. The couple hope in girdle the globe in what will be the longest taxi ride over -- if the veteran Austin lasts the distance.
The Hobbs, both 34, met and fell in love in Japan in 1954, and married in Denmark the following year. While hitch-hiking in Morocco they met five Englishmen who sold them the taxi for GBP35. Then the Hobbs started their epic trek, which took them across the Sahara, through Asia Minor to India, Pakistan and Malaya before making the sea trip to Japan. While in Pakistan the Hobbs acquired three puppy dogs, which are making the trip with them. Next stop: U.S.A. where Hobbs plans to visit his home in North Carolina.
