    THE CONFERENCE SPONSORED BY THE U.N. FOOD AND AGRICULTURAL ORGANISATION WAS ATTENDED BY REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE 14 MEMBER-COUNTRIES OF THE AFRO-MALAGSY COMMON ORGANISATION (OCAM), AND FROM BURUNDI, MALI, MAURITANIA AND BELGIUM.

    THE CONFERENCE, THE FIRST OF ITS KIND IN FRENCH-SPEAKING AFRICA, STEMS FROM A UNITED NATIONS VETERINARY CONGRESS IN LONDON IN 1960. THERE THE IDEA, ALREADY AN OLD ONE, TOOK SHAPE FOR THE CREATION OF A VETERINARY EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME.

    OTHER ORGANISATIONS SUBSEQUENTLY PURSUED THE IDEA - THE FAO, UNESCO, OAU. OCAM AT ITS JUNE CONFERENCE IN TANANARIVE PRESSED THE IDEA FURTHER AS THE NEED GREW TO LAUNCH A COMMON VETERINARY PROGRAMME WITH A TRAINING SCHOOL TO SERVE THEIR WHOLE REGION.
