    The city of Metz, France, celebrated the 1945 capitulation of the German military forces on Thursday, 8th. May, with a military and civic parade through the main thoroughfares culminating in a memorial service at the city's cenotaph.

    Canadian and American troops marched with the French garrison soldiers in the parade and paid their respects at the memorial to these troops killed in the world wars.

    Civic and military representatives laid wreaths at the foot of the cenotaph while the crowd of onlookers stood silent. A French military band/played the marches and hymns during the parade and short service of remembrance.

    Afterwards there was an investure for French officers who had undertaken dangerous missions or who had performed acts of gallantry during the war. When this ceremony was completed the assembled troops were reviewed by senior officers of the Canadian, American and French Armies in the Metz area.
