Background: Russian and American warships were among those of seven nations which visited the Ethiopian Red Sea port of Massawa during the country's 15th Navy week. The visiting ships also included an Italian frigate, the first Italian warship to participate in the celebrations since the modern naval base was established at Massawa 15 years ago. Navy week was from February 19th to the 23rd.

The Russian warship, the destroyer Blestyashgi, created a lot of interest. Russian naval presence in the Indian Ocean has been a subject of much discussion recently over the issue of whether Britain should sell arms to South Africa. This was a rare glimpse of the Russian Navy in the Indian Ocean area.

Britain's Royal Navy was represented by the frigate Eskimo, which carried a Wasp helicopter on board. Britain has just announced that she will allow the export of Wasp helicopters to South Africa and South Africa said she would order seven of them. The Wasp is designed to operate from frigates and destroyers and can carry two anti-submarine torpedoes.

Emperor Haile Selassie went on board the visiting ships and went to sea on board both the American guided missile destroyer Wainwright and the French Frigate Enseign Henry.

Later detachments from the visiting ships took part in a march past watched by the Emperor and Crown Prince Asfa Wessen.
