  • Description

Australia's World Cup Soccer team battled the hungarian side, Feranovaros, to a scoreless draw on Sunday (10 January) in the Australians' initial tune-up for the World Cup finals in June.

The match in Sydney Sports Ground, drew a crowd of 15,000 as Australian team manager Rale Rasic fielded a full strength side. However, the Hungarians were forced to play without star striker Albert.

Australia played an ultra-defensive line-up of 5-3-2 which Rasic has indicated will be his approach in the World Cup finals, depending on quick breakaways to score.

Neither side gained dominance in the match, but the hungarians undoubtedly should have had a goal when Laszlo Branikovits found a way through the Australian defence and past the goalkeeper, only to shoot wide at the open goal.

Ferencvaros, despite some good play, were unable to maintain any sustained pressure on the Australian goal. Australia on the other hand, playing with only two strikers, never really seriously threatened the Hungarians.

Seventeen years ago, the Australians suffered 9-2 and 6-2 defeats at the hands of Ferencvaros. In Adelaide last week, Australia went down 1-0 before holding the Hungarian side to the draw on Sunday. While this indicates dramatic improvement in Australian soccer, it may not be enough to stave off defeat in West Germany this summer.
