Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere described former Ugandan President Yusufu Lule as a liar and a fool for saying Tanzania wanted to take over Uganda and impose socialism there. Dr. Nyerere replied to Professor Lule's allegations during an emotional two hour speech in the border village of Bunzai at a homecoming ceremony on Wednesday (25 July) for several thousand Tanzanian troops returning from Uganda.
SYNOPSIS: Ten thousand Tanzanian soldiers celebrated their homecoming from a war in which they ousted Uganda's Idi Amin. And amongst them -- was Ugandan President Godfrey Binaisa.
The Tanzanian President Nyerere, welcomed President Binaisa warmly. Binaisa's predecessor Dr Lule was ousted after only ten weeks in office, because of disagreements with the Tanzanians. Now there is distrust. Lule accused Nyerere in an interview with the BBC of turning Uganda into a Tanzanian province. An allegation both Binaisa and Nyerere responded to in their speeches.
Tanzanian President Nyerere found stronger words to denounce Lule's allegations. He called him a liar and a fool for thinking Tanzania wanted to turn Uganda into a province. Nyerere appealed to Ugandans for unity and said Tanzania was ready to help them. But in their task of rebuilding he made it clear Tanzania would not involve their war-torn country itself in the internal affairs of Uganda.
