  • Description

LEADERS OF THE TWO COMMONWEALTH COUNTRIES - INDIA AND PAKISTAN -- ARE IN THE SOVIET UNION TO DISCUSS KASHMIR. THE SUMMIT -- IN TASHKENT -- IS THE RESULT OF AN INVITATION BY THE SOVIET PRIME MINISTER, MR KOSYGIN. THE INVITATION WAS MADE WHEN PRESIDENT AYUB KHAN AND PRIME MINISTER SHASTRI AGREED TO A CEASE-FIRE BETWEEN THE TWO WARRING COMMONWEALTH NEIGHBOURS IN SEPTEMBER.

THE TALKS BEGAN ON TUESDAY, CAME TO A HALT FOR NEARLY 48 HOURS AND RESUMED TODAY (FRIDAY). PRESIDENT AND PRIME MINISTER MET TWICE. THEN THEIR HOST, MR KOSYGIN TOOK THEM TO THE THEATRE TO SEE A PERFORMANCE OF TRADITIONAL SONGS AND DANCES OF UZBEKISTAN, OF WHICH TASHKENT IS THE CAPITAL.

DETAILS HAVE YET TO BE IRONED OUT OVER TROOP WITHDRAWALS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES, THE RELEASE OF SHIPS AND CARGOES SEIZED DURING THE 22-DAY WAR, AND THE REPATRIATION OF PRISONERS.
