"Europe at San Remo" - that was the theme of the 1961 spring flower parade held at San Remo, Italy, Feb 19. Hundreds of thousands of blooms were put in place in only one night for the big day. And at the end, spectators jostled to take what they could of the flowers.
The parade was opened, appropriately, by a comic Italian band. It comprised a variety of kitchen utensils! Then came a float representing San Remo, followed by a polar scene of flowers amid penguins and seals; From Belgium, a band from Liege and a folklore group from the Walloon area.
Preceding the Danish display, was a teenage band; and from France, a further show of flowers. West Germany sent a group of Bavarian dancers and a swan in flowers. Scottish dancers represented the United Kingdom, and on their float were two rampant lions aside a shield.
From Holland, dancers in national costume (led by a burgomaster), and a float with an obvious title: The Mill. And as well as beautiful flowers, there were the beauties, led by "Miss Europe 1960" (Miss Anna Ranalli).
