  • Description

RESCUE TEAMS EARLY TODAY (WEDNESDAY) BROUGHT OUT SIX POTHOLERS LOST IN FLOODED UNDERGROUND CAVES OF THE DANGEROUS DIAU GROTTO FOR THE PAST TWO DAYS.

THREE FIVE-MAN RESCUE TEAMS WHICH ENTERED THE GROTTO IN THE FRENCH ALPS LAST NIGHT BROUGHT THE POTHOLERS OUT.

THE POTHOLERS -- THREE FRENCH AND THREE BELGIANS -- WENT INTO THE LABYRINTH OF GALLERIES AND SUBTERRANEAN LAKES ON SUNDAY (JANUARY 1) WITH ONLY ONE DAY'S FOOD SUPPLIES AND LITTLE EQUIPMENT. THE SEARCH WAS ORGANISED WHEN THEY FAILED TO SURFACE LATE ON MONDAY NIGHT. BUT RESCUERS WERE PREVENTED FROM ENTERING THE GROTTO UNTIL LAST NIGHT BY SWOLLEN UNDERGROUND STREAMS NEAR ITS ENTRANCE 2,500 FEET (820 METRES) UP MOUNT PERMELAN.

THE AGES OF THE POTHOLERS VARIED FROM 15 TO 25. REPORTS FROM THE SCENE INDICATED THAT ALL WERE IN GOOD HEALTH EXCEPT ON MEMBER OF THE PARTY WHO WAS SUFFERING FROM FROSTBITE.
