  • Description

In Colon, Panama crowds of rampaging students set numerous fires in the course of a lengthy anti-government demonstration Monday night (June 6). They looted the national lottery headquarters and left it burning. They also burned autos and other buildings.

The demonstration started as a protest against alleged brutality by the Panamanian police. However President Marco Robles said Communists and hoodlums joined into the demonstrations and were responsible for much of the vandalism and looting.

The police arrested scores of students in Colon. Later, the rioting spread to Panama City.

All told, three persons were killed in the two cities and dozens were injured. Damage to buildings was estimated at millions of dollars.
