  • Description

Almost 15,000 Italians - most of them students - demonstrated against the Greek military junta for the third time in a week in Rome on Friday (November 23).

Some groups of students had been demonstrating in favour of the Greek Regime, and there were fights in the earlier demonstrations. Three policemen and several students were injured.

Greek opposition leader Andreas Papandreou, son of the late Prime Minister Georges Papandreou, is living in Rome. He told a press conference at Italian Socialist Party Headquarters on Tuesday (November 20) that at least 400 people had died in the rioting in Greece since the weekend, when students took over the Athens Polytechnic building. Official figures put the death toll at eleven.

Mr. Papandreou also claimed that 3,000 people were being held in Athens Sports Stadium. He said the United states Pentagon and the Central Intelligence Agency were helping the regime, and he called on Western European Governments to stop the United States helping a regime "which represses and massacres those fighting for the liberty of their country.

Friday's demonstration filled all the streets between Rome's Central Railway Station and the Piazza Esedra. Many of the demonstrators carried placards and chanted that democracy should return to Greece.
