  • Description

A SPECIAL CEREMONY IN SAIGON YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) WELCOMED AUSTRALIAN TROOPS - SOME 800 OF THEM - WHO HAD BEEN ARRIVING IN SOUTH VIETNAM BY AIR AND SEA SINCE MAY 25.

THE SOLDIERS - MEN OF THE FIRST BATTALION, ROYAL AUSTRALIAN REGIMENT - WERE INSPECTED BY GENERAL NGUYEN VAN THIEU, SOUTH VIETNAM'S DEFENCE MINISTER, AND THE SALUTE WAS TAKEN BY GENERAL TRAN VAN MINH, COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE ARMED FORCES. AFTER THE PARADE THE NEWLY ARRIVED AUSTRALIANS WERE PRESENTED WITH GARLANDS BY LOCAL GIRLS.

THE AUSTRALIAN MINISTER OF DEFENCE, SENATOR SHANE PALTRIDGE, SAID IN CANBERRA YESTERDAY THAT THE ROLE OF AUSTRALIAN TROOPS IN SOUTH VIETNAM WAS TO SECURE IMPORTANT MILITARY INSTALLATIONS AND AREAS, AND TO CARRY OUT THE ACTIVE PATROLLING NECESSARY TO ACHIEVE THIS. THEY MIGHT ALSO BE USED WITH AMERICAN TROOPS IN SUPPORT OF SOUTH VIETNAMESE FORCES UNDER ATTACK SHOULD THE MILITARY SITUATION REQUIRE IT.

THE SENATOR ALSO ANNOUNCED THAT ALL AIR AND SEA LIFTS OF THE FIRST BATTALION TO SOUTH VIETNAM HAD BEEN COMPLETED. HE ADDED THAT THEIR IMMEDIATE TASK IN VIETNAM WOULD BE THE PROTECTION OF AIRFIELDS LIKE BIEN HOA, BUT THE OVERALL AIM WAS TO PROTECT THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE PEOPLE AGAINST AGGRESSION.
