INTRODUCTION Thousands of farmers from northern Spain gather every year in the town of Abadiano -- about 20 miles (30 kms) from Bilbao -- for an Agricultural Fair.

SYNOPSIS: Displays of the latest in agricultural machinery including tractors are one of the attractions at the Fair.

The thousands of people who come every year are also interested in the displays of animals including oxen, mules and horses. Abadiano is in the heart of the Basque region of Spain, and many ancient Basque traditions are kept alive at the fair.

In particular, ancient Basque sports attract a great deal of attention. These sports are based on rural work such as tree cutting, oxen competitions and lifting stones. The greatest interest is in the stone-hauling competition in which a pair of oxen have to haul a two ton (2,000 kilogramme) stone up and down a track. The oxen have to haul the stone along the course as many times as possible in half an hour.

The sport is at least 200 years old, and a possible reason for its continued popularity is the heavy betting on the results. It's estimated that over one million pesetas (8,500 pounds sterling) is wagered on each event. The spectators bet on how many times a team can drag the stone over the course. Each driver goads his team along with the aid of a large stick.
