  • Description

BRITISH TROOPS WERE ON CONSTANT PATROL IN ADEN'S STREETS YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) FOR THE FIFTH SUCCESSIVE DAY. SHOPS WERE CLOSED AND PUBLIC TRANSPORT STAYED OFF THE STREETS. DEMONSTRATORS HARRASSED THE BRITISH TROOPS BY ERECTING BARRICADES ACROSS THE NARROW STREETS OF THE ARAB DISTRICT AND LIGHTING SHALL FIRES EVERYWHERE.

OCCASIONALLY CROWDS FORMED IN THE STREETS, AND THEN MELTED AWAY AS QUICKLY, JUST TO INCREASE THE IRRITATION TACTICS NOW BEING USED IN THE ARAB FIGHT AGAINST THE BRITISH TROOPS.

BRITISH FORCES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR KEEPING ORDER IN THE PROTECTORATE UNTIL INDEPENDENCE NEXT YEAR. THE RECENT WAVE OF VIOLENCE, WHICH WAS FANNED BY THE DEATH OF THE THREE SONS OF FORMER ADENI CHIEF MINISTER ABDUL QAWEE MACKAWEE IN A BOND BLAST, HAS MADE THEIR TASK THAT MUCH MORE DIFFICULT.

TODAY (FRIDAY) EIGHT DEMONSTRATORS WERE ARRESTED AFTER A STREET WAS BARRICADED WITH ROCKS AND WOODEN BOXES IN THE CRATER DISTRICT.

SOME NATIONALIST GROUPS IN ADEN OPPOSE THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, WHICH THEY REGARD AS INFLUENCED BY BRITAIN. A UNITED NATIONS MISSION IS DUE IN ADEN THIS MONTH TO STUDY PROCESS TOWARDS FREE ELECTIONS AND INDEPENDENCE.
