  • Description

The Zaire Transport Ministry took delivery of four river ferries on Friday (25 August) which will increase water transport services under an improvement programme ordered by President Mobutu Sose Seko.

They will play the River Zaire between Kisangani and Ubundu in the region of Haut-Zaire; and between Lodi and Bolonga in the region of Kasai Occidental.

The ferries were built in the Chanic Dockyard at a total cost of about GBP245,000. Each of 35 tons, they are fitted with a steering propeller which eliminates the need for rudders.

Water transport is important in Zaire because of the poor state of roads in general and the damage inflicted on the railway system during the struggles before independence.
