  • Description

Broadcasting and information officials from five Gulf States have taken further decisions towards launching a joint organisation for producing the region's own colour television programmes.

The decisions were taken by representatives from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, kuwait and the United Arab Emirates at a two day conference in Riyadh which ended on Monday (18 February).

The programmes will be jointly financed by the region's states and will reflect local traditions, folklore and arts which have received little attention from existing Arab programme suppliers until now.

Since the first meeting for inter-state colour television co-ordination took place a year ago the Gulf's first all colour station has gone on the air in Bahrain. Plans for two more are going ahead in Dubai and the Sultanate of Oman, and existing stations have begun switching to colour.

The Riyadh conference again discussed plans for a "Gulfvision" microwave network linking stations on the lines of Eurovision.
