Background: Five new bishops were ordained by the National Administrative Commission of the Chinese Catholic Church and the Chinese Catholic Bishops College. The ceremony was held on July 24th in the Cathedral of St Mary of the Immaculate Conception in the southwest part of Peking.
The five are Paul Xu Zhenjiang of the Shenyang Diocese in Liaoning province, Joseph Qian Huimin of the Nanjing Diocese in Jiangsu province, Mathias Ma Longlin of the Suzhou Diocese in Jiangsu province, Augustin Zhao Jingnong of the Tianshui Diocese in Gansu province, and Laurence Zhang Wenbin of the Dali Diocese in Shanxi province.
They were each elected by their representative clergy and congregations through secret ballot.
Mass was held after the consecration.
