Background: Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother watched ceremonial dancing at the old port of Mombasa, Feb 10 on the second day of her visit. She arrived with the Governor of Kenya, Sir Evelyn Baring and was greeted by the Liwali of the coast, Sheikh Mbarak Ali Hinawy, who welcomed her to Mombasa pledging Arab loyalty to the Crown.

The Queen Mother recalled that when she last visited Mombasa 34 years ago, the Liwali was in the early years of his long service to the Crown. She wished him health in his imminent retirement.

After meeting several leading citizens, the Queen Mother stepped aboard a pilot cutter to sail around the headland. The crews of 30 Arabs dhows in the harbour made a colourful spectacle, chanting and beating drums in greeting.

The cutter took her the channel leading to Mombasa's modern port if Lilindini where the Royal East African Navy minesweeper Bassingham took up escort duty. Farther up the channel Mombasa's entire yacht fleet drew up in three formations to stage an impressive sail-past.

The cutter went inshore on both sides of the channel to give the crowds on the foreshore a chance to see - and cheer - the royal visitor.

Later the Queen Mother drove back through the town to a multi-racial reception given by the women of Mombasa, and then visited the Makupa memorial to King George VI.
