  • Description

Firemen carrying banners marched through Paris streets on Thursday (4 March) to press for better working conditions.

Meanwhile main line stations in the city were quiet as railwaymen went on strike in protest at the rising cost of living. They called for increased salaries and better working conditions.

About 1,000 professional and civil firemen gathered outside the Finance Ministry building in Place du Palais Royal, and the Interior Ministry in Place Beauveau.

They want a reduction in working hours, better working conditions and retirement at 50.

The demonstration was organised by the General Confederation of Labour (C.G.T.) and the French Confederation of Labour (C.F.D.T.).

Workers with the French Main Line (S.N.C.F.) had given notice of industrial action between 3 March and 6 March, and chose Thursday for the strike over their claims.

The C.G.T. and the C.F.D.T. have also given notice of "a week of action and meetings" for railway workers between 8 March and 13 March.

The railwaymen will meet on 10 March and their action is also expected to involve workers on the Paris underground.

The strike on Thursday normally the busiest day, hit commuters particularly at the Montparnasse and North stations of Paris.
