    Background: FOUR THOUSAND STUDENTS PAID 20 SHILLINGS EACH TONIGHT (FRIDAY) TO DANCE NON-STOP FOR NINE HOURS - ALL IN AID OF CHARITY. IT HAPPENED IN THE GRAND HALL OF ALEXANDRA PALACE, IN NORTH LONDON AND 13 JAZZ BANDS, INCLUDING ONE FROM AUSTRALIA AND ANOTHER FORM WEST GERMANY,WERE PRESENT TO KEEP THE MUSIC GOING FORM 10 P.M. UNTIL SEVEN TOMORROW MORNING.

    STUDENTS FROM UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES IN AND AROUND LONDON STARTED TO ARRIVE EARLY FOR THE "ALLY PALLY STOMP" AS THE OCCASION WAS CALLED. AND THE FIRST BAND TO GREET THEM WAS THE MELBOURNE NEW ORLEANS JAZZ BAND. OTHER BANDS WAITING TO TAKE THE STAND, INCLUDING SOME OF THE BEST IN BRITAIN, WERE THE CLYDE VALLEY STOMPERS, DICK CHARLESWORTH AND HIS CITY GENTS, AND MONTY SUNSHINE'S JAZZ BAND. OTHER BANDS HAD NAMES AS COLOURFUL AS THE STUDENT'S CLOTHES.

    COMES AS YOU PLEASE WAS THE ORDER OF THE NIGHT- AND EARLY MORNING. STRAW HATS, TOP HATS, STRIPPED SHIRTS, BIZARRE SPECTACLES, DIAMOND PATTERN BLANKETS AND UMBRELLAS - WERE ALL WORN WITH GREAT ABANDON AS LONDON'S STUDENTS LET THEIR HAIR DOWN.

    TRADITIONAL JAZZ, RAGTIME, STOMPING AND THE TWIST - WHATEVER THE TUNE, WHATEVER THE RHYTHMN, THE STUDENTS KEPT ON DANCING. ONE CARRIED HIS BEDROLL ON A STRING OVER HIS SHOULDER IN CASE EXHAUSTION ARRIVED BEFORE SEVEN A.M.

    AND AT THE END OF IT ALL SOME SIX CHARITIES ARE EXPECTED TO BENEFIT - INCLUDING THE OXFORD FAMINE RELIEF FOUND.
