Background: Weather of almost Springlike mildness over most of Britain, following the Christmas holiday, brought motorists out in their thousands... squirrels out of hibernation...caused certain flowers to blossom before time. VISNEWS cameras went to Kew Botannical Gardens Dec 30 where Mother Nature really seems to have her seasons confused.
Mauve Veronica is ahead of its time and gives unexpected colour to the Winter landscape. The Chinese Wytch Hazel, with its golden scented petals is one of the most distinctive shrubs flowering before their accustomed time. Rough weather may yet be in store but the scene at Kew is reminiscent of early Spring.
Temperatures over the past few days of 50 degrees or more for England and Wales, were about five degrees higher than normal according to Air Ministry weather experts.
