  • Description

Volkswagen, the West German car manufacturer, has taken another step away form the traditional Beetle shape with the release of a new range of cars aimed at beating petrol princes.

The new cars called "Scirocco" boast almost sporty lines, a design by Italian stylist Giorgio guigiaro. Basically a coupe design, the cars are available in several different models with a range of three engines; an 1100cc motor, a 1500cc motor and a higher compression ratio 1500cc motor.

The "Scirocco" range is essentially aimed at the small car market with good performance and petrol economy. Safety features are also a major plus for the cars. Seat belts which fasten automatically when the doors are closed are fitted to the front seats, and the entire passenger cell is stiffened to give protection in accidents. The front and rear ends of the car are designed to progressively crumple on impact. All components within impact range are either upholstered or designed to yield. The fuel tank is fitted outside the passenger call and is in a protected place. The steering column is collapsible.

Other departures for Volkswagen are found under the bonnet. The engines are water-cooled, with an overhead camshaft, and drive the front wheels.
