    Background: The Royal Government of Laos and the pro-Communist Pathet Lao signed a ceasefire agreement on Wednesday in the administrative capital of Vientiane. The agreement stipulated that fighting would cease today (Thursday), thus ending more than 10 years of civil war. A provisional coalition government would also be formed, pending elections, with half the posts allotted to the Vientiane government and half to the Pathet Lao. The United States announced that bombing operations over Laos would be halted directly the ceasefire came into effect. The new agreement calls for the withdrawal of all foreign forces from Laos within 90 days.
