Background: Hundreds of right-wingers brought rush-hour traffic to a halt in the Spanish capital of Madrid on Monday (2 February), when they massed for the funeral of Patricio Gonzalez de Canales, one of the leaders and founders of the right-wing Falange Party, the ideological core of the National Movement.

Singing the Falange hymn, "Cara Al Sol" (Face to the Sun), the blue-shirted Falangists raised their arms in salute as the coffin of their leader was carried down a central street.

Falangists are Spain's extreme right-wing group and lead the fight to continue the rule of the late General Francisco Franco. Canales, like may of the Falangists, was a veteran of the Spanish Civil War and the Blue Division that fought for Hitler on the Russian Front in World War Two.

Aged 64, he was one of the founding members of the party which gathered strength during the civil war from 1936 to 1939.

From an upper class family, Canales had an academic as well as a military background. He studied at the universities of Madrid and Seville and at one time held the post of Assistant Professor of Law. He founded several newspapers in Seville and San Tander.

SYNOPSIS: Hundreds of members of the extreme right-wing Flange Party rallied in Madrid on Monday for the funeral of one of their leaders, Patricio Gonzalez de Canales.

Canales, aged sixty-four, was one of the founder members of the Falangists who gathered strength during the Spanish Civil War in the nineteen-thirties. The Falangists paid tribute to their former leader by singing their hymn, "Cara Al Sol" or "Face to the Sun".

As the three thousand mourners joined a funeral procession, traffic in Madrid was halted in the centre of the city. This was the second time in recent months the Falangists have come together for a funeral. In November they rallied for the funeral of General Franco and vowed to continue the fight for his rule in Spain.

Canales came from an upper class family and had an academic as well as a military background. He studied at the universities of Madrid and Seville and lectured in law. He was a founder member of the Falange Movement from its inception on nineteen thirty-three.

Canales joined forces with Franco in the civil war when the Falange Party gathered strength and power. Today, it has little apparent authority in the Government but many of its members are in high positions
