  • Description

BARELY 50 MILES SOUTH OF THE 17TH PARALLEL WHICH DIVIDES THE COMMUNIST NORTH VIETNAM AND SOUTH VIETNAM, THE IMPERIAL CITY OF HUE ON THE CLEAR GREEN "RIVER OF PERFUMES" IS ONE OF THE BEAUTIFUL SPOTS OF SOUTH VIETNAM. TOURISTS LOVE ITS SCENIC BEAUTY, ITS ROYAL PALACES AND ROYAL TOMBS DEPICTING THE PAST GLORY.

SUCCESSIVE ANNAMESE EMPERORS BUILT THE ROYAL TOMBS, EACH TO SUIT THE ROYAL TASTE OF THE BUILDER. EMPEROR TU DUC SPENT MANY YEARS BEFORE HIS DEATH AT THE TOMB HE BUILT FOR HIMSELF, WRITING POETRY LIVING IN A PLEASANT LITTLE HOUSE BUILT OVER A LAKE HEAVILY COVERED WITH LOTUS.

A LITTLE NORTH TO THE IMPERIAL CITY OF HUE, ONLY 20 MILES FROM THE PARALLEL IS ANOTHER HISTORIC PLACE, LAVANG, FAMOUS OF FOR ITS BASILICA.

THE BASILICA IS IN THE ARCHBISHOPRIC OF HUE, OVER WHICH PRESIDENT DIEM'S BROTHER ARCHBISHOP NGO DINH THUC PRESIDES.

AT THE BASILICA THERE IS ALSO A FOUNTAIN WHICH IS REPUTED TO HAVE CURED MANY PEOPLE OF THEIR DISEASES.

BETWEEN 1798 AND 1801 EMPEROR TAY SON PERSECUTED CHRISTIANS IN ANNAM. THE FAITHFUL HID THEMSELVES IN THE JUNGLES OF LAVANG. AFTER TAY SON HAS DEFEATED BY THE FRENCH A SMALL WOODEN STRUCTURE FOR VIRGIN MARY WAS BUILT AT LAVANG. IN 1885 ANOTHER PERSECUTION OF CHRISTIANS OCCURRED AND THE CHAPEL WAS BURNT. BUT IN ITS PLACE, THE PRESENT BASILICA ROSE.

THE FIRST CARDINAL TO VISIT SOUTH VIETNAM, CARDINAL SPELLMAN, IN 59, CELEBRATED MASS AT LIVING BASILICA, WHICH HAS BECOME THE MOST FAMOUS RELIGIOUS CENTRE FOR SOUTH VIETNAM'S CATHOLICS.
