    Background: COMPETITORS FROM 13 COUNTRIES ARE TAKING PART IN THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS FOR RADIO-CONTROLLED MODEL AIRCRAFT IN THE UNITED KINGDOM THIS WEEK. THE CHAMPIONSHIPS BEGIN TOMORROW (FRIDAY) AT THE ROYAL AIR FORCE STATION AT KENLEY, IN SURREY, AND GO ON FOR THREE DAYS.

    THE MODELS TAKING PART ARE AMONG THE FINEST IN THE WORLD, AND ARE CAPABLE OF ALL THE AEROBATIC MOVEMENTS THAT ARE EXPERIENCED PILOT CAN CARRY OUT IN A FULL-SIZED AIRCRAFT. CONTROLLING THEM BY RADIO IS A HIGHLY SKILLED TASK, CALLING FOR YEARS OF EXPERIENCE. IN THE CONTEST, THE MODELS HAVE TO BE PUT THROUGH A FIXED SCHEDULE OF MANOEUVRES, AND THE WINNERS ARE CHOSEN BY FIVE JUDGES OF DIFFERENT NATIONALITIES. THERE IS AN INDIVIDUAL AND A TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP.

    THE MODELS ARE ALL ROUGHLY OF THE SAME TYPE. THEY HAVE A WING-SPAN OF ABOUT SIX FEET (A LITTLE UNDER 2 METRES), AND ARE DRIVEN BY A SMALL INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE.
