Background: IN BLOEMFONTEIN'S FREE STATE STADIUM, AS ESTIMATED 35,000 PEOPLE, WHITE AND NON-WHITE, WATCHED THE OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE ALL-WHITE SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL GAMES.

THE GAMES ARE THE SECOND TO BE HELD, AND ARE THE GREATEST SPORTING SPECTACLE EVER STAGED IN SOUTH AFRICA.

THE SOUTH AFRICAN STATE PRESIDENT, JIM FOUCHE, SAID IN HIS OPENING SPEECH HE HOPED INTERNATIONAL SPORT WAS NOT ON THE AVERAGE BY DEGENERATION AND WOULD NOT BE DESTROYED BY INTERNATIONAL POLITICS. HE SAID IT WAS PERHAPS UNFORTUNATE THAT INTERNATIONAL SPORTS ACHIEVEMENTS WERE BEING USED AS A TARDSTICK TO DETERMINE THE PRESTIGE OF A COUNTRY.

MORE THAN A HUNDRED FOREIGN ATHLETES WILL COMPETE IN 46 DIFFERENT SPORTS DURING THE NEXT MONTH. COMPETITION WILL RANGE FROM SWIMMING AND ATHLETICS TO TENNIQUOITS AND MICRO-MIDGET CAR RACING.

SEVERAL BLACK AFRICAN STATES WITHDREW THEIR TEAMS AFTER ACCEPTING INVITATIONS TO COMPETE; OTHERS HAVE PROTESTED AGAINST FOREIGN ATHLETES COMPETING. SOUTH AFRICA'S RACIAL POLICIES WHICH LED TO HER ABSENCE FROM THE OLYMPICS HAVE AFFECTED EVEN HER NATIONAL GAMES.

THE OPENING CEREMONY REACHED ITS CLIMAX IN AN OLYMPIC-STYLE TORCH LIGHTING AS SPRINT CHAMPION PAUL NASH, JOINT HOLDER OF THE WORLD 100-YARDS RECORD, LIT THE GAMES TORCH, WHICH WILL BURN TILL THE GAMES END.

THE GAMES PLEDGE WAS TAKEN BY SWIMMER CAREN MUIR ON BEHALF OF ALL THE COMPETITORS.

THE CEREMONY ENDED AS SCORES OF PIGEONS AND BALLOONS WERE RELEASED OVER THE ARENA.
