  • Description

Italian President Giuseppe Saragat today (Thursday) began sounding out Italian political leaders of all parties on ways to solve the present government crisis.

The consultations began when former Italian President Giovanni Gronchi, 81, called at the President's Quirinale palace.

The former President was followed by the speakers of the Senate and Chamber of Deputies, Christian Democrat Amintore Fanfani and Socialist Sandro Pertini, and a long stream of ex-prime ministers, ex-speakers and party and parliamentary leaders.

The consultations are expected to end on Saturday after which President Saragat will name a politician to try and form a new government.

The seven-month-old Centre-left government of Prime Minister Marciano Rumor resigned last Saturday after a split in the Socialist party, which made it unlikely that the same coalition would reform.
