  • Description

Cuban military tribunals resumed operations November 30 at Pinar del Rio, near Havana, Cuba. 39 prisoners - including two British-born men, Austin Young and Peter John Lambton - are accused of plotting against the Castro regime.

Young (26), an ex-Royal Air Force pilot and naturalised American, faces the death penalty for leading a band of anti-Castro rebels.

Lambton (24) of Nassau, Bahamas, claims American citizenship through his mother's marriage to an American. The tribunal, however, recognizes him as British. He faces a 30-year gaol sentence for counter-revolutionary activity.

Another American, Cuban-born Rafael del Pino, on trial in Havana, may get the death sentence.

By December 3 -- at the end of the trial, there was still no indication when verdicts on Young and Lambton would be announced.

They were arrested last month after soldiers surrounded a farmhouse 80 miles west of Havana. Shots were exchanged before the men surrendered and a soldier was killed.

In pre-trial statements, Young and Lambton denied they came to Cuba to join counter-revolutionaries. Lambton said he came to take Press pictures of rebels. Young came to Cuba to act as his guide.

Military tribunals in Cuba were discontinued four months ago after more than 500 executions had been carried out. In a swoop by the military last week, 250 were arrested as counter-revolutionary suspects.
