A unique indoctrination training program is being conducted by the 1st Brigade of the 101st Airborne Infantry Division at Phan Rang, South Vietnam. The training includes instruction in combat techniques unique to Vietnam and is conducted under combat conditions in the "backyard" of enemy territory.
In addition to replacement training for new arrivals, the course includes a combat reaction course for squad leaders and small unit training for evaluation.
Each replacement arriving at the brigade's base camp at Phan Rang receives 80 hours of instruction during six days and nights of training to improve his knowledge and skills in guerrilla warfare. In addition to tactical situations, physical conditioning and acclimatization to the tropical climate of Vietnam are stressed.
The squad leaders' combat reaction course is designed to familiarize the squad leader with local operational tactics and procedures. During the course the squad leader encounters a series of realistic situations demanding immediate decisions and actions.
Small unit training includes instruction in counterinsurgency, firing individual and crew-operated weapons, and mortar and artillery support.
