    CLAYTON, UNKNOWN AS A DISTANCE RUNNER IN BRITISH ATHLETICS BEFORE HE EMIGRATED IN 1963 BETTERED THE PREVIOUS WOULD BEST TIME OVER A ONE-WAY COURSE OF TWO HOURS 12 MINUTES SET BY JAPAN'S MORIO SHIGEMATSU ON 12 JUNE, 1965 AT THE WINDSOR MARATHON.

    THE PREVIOUS FASTEST TIME FOR A TWO-WAY COURSE WAS TWO HOURS 12 MINUTES 11.2 SECONDS SET BY ABEBE BIKLIA, OF ETHIOPIA, WHEN WINNING THE TOKYO OLYMPICS IN 1964. CLAYTON'S RUN WAS ALSO THE FIRST SUB FIVE MINUTE PER MILE MARATHON.

    CLAYTON WAS PREVIOUSLY CONSIDERED A STRONG RATHER THAN SPEEDY RUNNER BUT AFTER EMIGRATING TO AUSTRALIA HE FOUND CONDITIONS SO MUCH TO HIS LIKING THAT OVER THE LONG DISTANCES EVEN THE GREAT RON CLARKE COULD NOT MATCH HIM.

    AFTER HIS GRUELLING RUN CLAYTON SAID: "THE CONDITIONS WERE PERFECT. THE WEATHER IDEAL AND THE CROWD WONDERFUL. THIS IS THE HAPPIEST TIME IN MY LIFE."
    JAPAN'S SEIICHIRO SASAKI WAS SECOND IN A TIME OF TWO HOURS 11 MINUTES 17 SECONDS WITH DAVID MCKENZIE IN THIRD PLACE WITH A TIME OF TWO HOURS 12 MINUTES 25.8 SECONDS.

    THE DEFENDING CHAMPION, MIKE RYAN, OF NEW ZEALAND, AFTER A STRONG CHALLENGE FINISHED WELL DOWN THE FIELD.
