  • Description

The Syrian authorities in Damascus showed 34 Israeli prisoners to the World's newsmen on Monday (15 October). They were the first large batch of prisoners captured by the Syrians to be shown to foreign correspondents.

Syrian officers said they were tank crews that had been captured that day on the Golan heights. When the newsmen arrived, the young men were squatting in lines in the dusty sand, their heads bowed between their knees, and their hands tied.

Correspondent described the prisoners as very young and looking sad and dazed. Some were wounded, but their injuries had been dressed. One man had both arms in splints and bandages, and another had an eye covered.

When the cameramen crowded in to take close-up photographs, they were pushed away by soldiers and officers. The correspondents were not allowed to question the prisoners.

As the newsmen left, the prisoners were being blindfolded and helped into waiting military trucks.
