    TRANSCRIPT: MAYEN: "THE FIGHT IS VERY SERIOUS INDEED. EVERYWHERE IN THE NILE STATE OUT PEOPLE ARE FIGHTING THE ARABS.



    REPORTER: "WHAT ARE THE DIFFICULTIES?"



    MAYEN: "THE DIFFICULTY SOMETIMES COMES WITH REGARD TO WAR MATERIALS WHEN WAR MATERIALS RUN SHORT IT FORCES OUR OFFENSIVE OR ACTIVITY TO DECLINE".



    REPORTER: "IN FACT WHAT WEAPONS HAVE YOU GOT?"



    MAYEN: "WE ARE USING A FEW AUTOMATIC RIFLES AND THEN SOME HOME-MADE GUNS, AND MOLOTOV BOMBS".

    MAYEN: "THE ARABS ARE ARMED WITH MODERN WEAPONS WHICH THEY RECEIVE FROM RUSSIA AND PREVIOUSLY FROM OTHER NATIONS".



    REPORTER: "WHAT DO YOU WANT THE OUTSIDE WORLD TO DO ABOUT IT?"



    MAYEN: "WELL, WHAT WE HAVE BEEN ASKING THE OUTSIDE WORLD TO DO IS TO BRING MORAL PRESSURE TO BEAR UPON THE ARABS TO ACCEPT A PEACEFUL SOLUTION, OR NEGOTIATION. SO FAR NOW THE ARABS ARE ADAMANT, BECAUSE THEY ARE A MILITARY POWER, AND THEY DO NOT WANT TO NEGOTIATE. SINCE THE ARABS ARE ADAMANT, AND THE WORLD KNOWS THE ARABS ARE NOT PREPARED FOR NEGOTIATION, THE WORLD SHOULD GIVE EITHER HELP, IF IT MEANS THE UNITED NATIONS INTERFERING AND TAKING OVER THE POSITION IN THE SOUTH AND PREPARE FOR A ....(INDISTINQUISHABLE)...FOR THE NILE LANDS."



    REPORTER: "BUT THE KHARTOUM GOVERNMENT HAS ALREADY OFFERED PARTIAL AUTONOMY TO THE SOUTHERN SUDAN. WHY DON'T YOU ACCEPT THAT"?.



    MAYEN: "(...INDISTINQUISHABLE)....THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THE ARABS HAVE OFFERED A SORT OF THING OF THAT KIND. IN 1965 THEY DID THE SAME, AND THE INTENTION IS TO LURE THE POLITICAL EXILES AND THE REFUGEES TO GO BACK....THEY START AT ONCE TO BUTCHER THEM. THIS DEFINITELY HAPPENED IN 1965."



    REPORTER: "HOW MANY PEOPLE DO YOU RECKON HAVE BEEN KILLED IN THIS WAR"?



    MAYEN: "ABOUT THREE-QUARTERS OF A MILLION SO FAR! THE UNITED NATIONS HAS ESTIMATED THESE AT FIVE-HUNDRED THOUSAND".

    THE SUDAN HAS FACED A BITTER INTERNAL STRUGGLE WHICH BEGAN SOON AFTER BRITISH GOVERNMENT CONTROL OF THE SUDAN ENDED. DURING THE PAST FIFTEEN YEARS IN PARTICULAR THE NORTH AND SOUTH HAVE BEEN ENGAGED IN A FIERCE RACIAL AND RELIGIOUS WAR.

    REFUGEES FROM THE SUDAN HAVE RECENTLY ALLEGED THAT ISRAEL IS SUPPLYING THE SOUTH WITH ARMS AND MILITARY KNOWLEDGE, WHILE MR. GORDON MAYEN AND HIS SUPPORTERS BELIEVE RUSSIA TO BE DOING THE SAME FOR THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT OF JAAFAR EL-NIMEIRY, IN KHARTOUM.

    THE NILE PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT OF MR. MAYEN HAS APPEALED TO THE UNITED NATIONS TO HELP STOP THE BLOODSHED.

    IN KAMPALA LAST WEEK, MR. MAYEN SPOKE TO A REPORTER, WHO ASKED HOW SERIOUS THE FIGHTING IS.
