    MR. GORDON MAYEN, PRESIDENT OF THE NILE PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT, WHICH OPPOSES THE KHARTOUM GOVERNMENT, AND IS FIGHTING FOR THE INDEPENDENCE OF THE SOUTHERN SUDAN HAS SPOKEN TO A BRITISH REPORTER ABOUT THE PROBLEMS FACING THE TERRITORY.

    THE SUDAN HAS FACED A BITTER INTERNAL STRUGGLE WHICH BEGAN SOON AFTER BRITISH GOVERNMENT CONTROL OF THE SUDAN ENDED. DURING THE PAST FIFTEEN YEARS IN PARTICULAR THE NORTH AND SOUTH HAVE BEEN ENGAGED IN A FIERCE RACIAL AND RELIGIOUS WAR.

    REFUGEES FROM THE SUDAN HAVE RECENTLY ALLEGED THAT ISRAEL IS SUPPLYING THE SOUTH WITH ARMS AND MILITARY KNOWLEDGE, WHILE MR. GORDON MAYEN AND HIS SUPPORTERS BELIEVE RUSSIA TO BE DOING THE SAME FOR THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT OF JAAFAR EL-NIMEIRY, IN KHARTOUM.

    THE NILE PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT OF MR. MAYEN HAS APPEALED TO THE UNITED NATIONS TO HELP STOP THE BLOODSHED.

    IN KAMPALA LAST WEEK, MR. MAYEN SPOKE TO A REPORTER, WHO ASKED HOW SERIOUS THE FIGHTING IS.
