  • Description

Many members of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Delegates at present visiting Sydney, saw for the first time today the colour and drama of an Australian Surf Carnival. Members of a dozen Sydney Surf Life Saving Clubs took part in the carnival on Newport Beach. It was organised by the Newport Club for delegates of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association. It's on the Sydney beaches where these clubs were first started on a large scale -- and they are now the model of similar clubs in many parts of the British Commonwealth. The carnival was watched by delegates from practically every member nation.

But it was -- as you can see -- a boisterous surf. The heavy seas and blustering winds forced the cancellation of most of the boat races and events. But the delegates watch beach competitions with interest.

Here's one boat trying to get on a breaker -- but it fails. One Commonwealth delegate -- from Nigeria -- said that clubs, organised on Australian lines - had now been formed in his country. This carnival provided an impressive display. Here's another crew -- and this one comes to grief on a dumper. A member of the Collaroy Club - Ken Hyde - was slightly injured when the boat overturned. Hyde suffered shock and abrasions.

Altogether a rough day but a striking demonstration by Sydney's Lifesaving Clubs.
