    MR HUMPREY BROOKE, THE ACADEMY SECRETARY, SAID THE DEFACING TOOK PLACE DURING A PRIVATE PREVIEW FOR 2,000 ART LOVERS. HE DESCRIBED THE VANDAL AS AN ECCENTRIC.

    THE PICTURE IS ONE OF 250 OF BONNARD'S WORKS AT AN EXHIBITION, WHICH OPENED TO THE PUBLIC TODAY (THURSDAY). INSURED FOR MORE THAN GBP8 MILLION STERLING, IT'S THE BIGGEST RETROSPECTIVE DISPLAY OF HIS WORKS EVER HELD AND THE MOST VALUABLE LOAN COLLECTION LONDON HAS SEEN.
