  • Description

Britain's fastest growing motor sport is drag racing which is now pulling in more fans than any other forms of cart racing short of a major Grand Prix.

On Sunday (12 May) a large number of dragsters and enthusiasts gathered at Blackbushe, Hampshire, for the fourth round of the National Drag Racing Club championships.

During the day's racing one of Britain's best drag racing drivers Clive Skilton set up a new British record by covering a quarter of a mile (402 metres) in 6.91 seconds and his speed at the finish line was 220 m.p.h. (354 k.m.s.)
In drag races two drivers race over a quarter of a mile straight and any form of car can compete from the family saloon to the top fuel dragsters which are powered on nitro and methanol fuel. The cars, of course, compete in their own classes.

Drag racing was imported to Britain from the United States, the home of the sport. And the first real drag race meeting in Britain was held by an American team at the Blackbushe course in 1964.

The sport has since spread to Australia, Sweden, West Germany, South Africa, New Zealand and Japan.

Britain's daragsters probably now rank second to the Americans and British drivers were second to do the quarter mile in under seven seconds.

They will have a chance to test their skills against European opposition on 12 August when the National Drag Racing Club holds an international meeting at Blackbushe.
