  • Description

This looks very much like an oil-mining township. But don't be led into thinking that it has been erected by builders. What you see is the work of scale-model-makers of the Soviet Union's Chamber of Commerce. The replica is five thousand times as small as the original.

The model shows the working of oil deposits with the use of artificial water flooding inside and outside the deposit, demonstrating, for all to see, the advantages of inside flooding.

The pumping wells through which water is brought down under pressure are drilled inside oil deposits and not on their sides.

The method has been widely recognised by experts in many nation as promising.

This scale model also shows an innovation of great future. In several days in will be shipped to the World Exhibition in Montreal.

And this operating model of a combined drilling rig is being put together under the direct supervision of its chief designer Valentin Sonin.

So far, the Soviet Union has less than ten such rigs, but many companies of Japan and Federal Germany are ready to buy them.

This new rig takes over the difficult underground work of drifting shafts. It is operated by eight workers on the surface. The drifting speed is from one hundred and twenty to one hundred and fifty metres of month.

The model will also be on show in the Soviet Union's Pavilion of the World Exhibition in Montreal.
