  • Description

During the emergency here in Kenya one of the tragic results were children who were left to find their own way through life. Doubtless hundreds of children died through having lost their mothers and fathers but some of them were rescued by the Salvation Army, and are now being looked after in a 'home' in Nairobi. This home is run by Captain Doris Green. Today I had the privilege of seeing this home and how it was run, and how some of the African children were experiencing love for the first time in their short lives. A number of the children had been brought in to the home by people who had found them more dead than alive and they were nursed and fed by Capt. Green. Capt. Green is a most remarkable person who has dedicated her life to looking after children of all races irrespective of colour race of creed. She has been an officer in the Salvation Army for 17 years and has been abroad doing the same king of work in India for most of the time. She came to Kenya about 18 months ago and took over this home. Most of the African children are children of members of the Mau Mau, but some had their parents killed by them. While I was at the home today, the Probation Officer Mrs. Cook, arrived with an Asian woman who had five children, the eldest one nine years old, she was parted from her husband and there was nobody who could look after her children whist she is in hospital undergoing a serious operation, so Doris Green said she would look after them, the Indian woman said she had no money to pay for their keep whilst they were at the home but as far as Miss Green was concerned that was secondary, their keep would be paid for somehow. Every day some little waif is brought in and never is one turned away from the door.
