Background: Sebastian Coe, the British 1500 metres Olympic gold medallist, moved effortlessly into the final of the mens' 800 metres event at the European Athletics Championships in Athens on September 7. Coe won the first of two semi-finals when he ran home ahead of the reigning European champion, Olaf Beyer of East Germany. Coe's time of 1 minute 47.98 seconds was nearly five seconds slower than his fastest pace and he admitted after the race he did not feel comfortable racing at that speed. But he was clearly saving energy for the final on September 8. Coe was joined in the final by another British athlete, Garry Cook, who qualified in the second of the day's semi-finals in a race won by the West German H. P. Ferner.
