  • Description

GAZA -- THE SCENE OF RECENT HEAVY FIGHTING BETWEEN ISRAEL AND EGYPT -- IS VIRTUALLY BACK TO NORMAL DESPITE THE PRESENCE OF ISRAELI OCCUPATION FORCES.

PAST DIFFERENCES ARE APPARENTLY FORGOTTEN -- AT LEAST BETWEEN ARAB SHOPKEEPERS AND ISRAELI TOURISTS WHO HAVE FLOCKED TO GAZA.

BUSINESS IS BRISK AND GOODS OF ALL DESCRIPTIONS -- FROM EGYPTIAN POTTERY TO RUBBER DUCKS AND JAPANESE BALK POINT PENS ARE ON DISPLAY.

THE STREET MARKETS ARE FULL OF COLOUR AS ISRAELIS DRESSED SPORTS SHIRTS AND HOLIDAY-WEAR MINGLE WITH ARAB MEN IN FLOWING ROBES AND WOMEN, WHO HIDE THEIR FACES BEHIND VEILS.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE, THE WOMEN'S FASHION WORLD HAS BEEN THE CAUSE OF TROUBLE. YOUNG MINI-SKIRTED ISRAELI GIRLS WERE REPORTED TO HAVE DISTURBED GAZA'S MEN TO SUCH AN EXTENT THAT THE ISRAELI MILITARY GOVERNOR WAS FORCED TO PUT A BAN ON MINI-SKIRTS.

THE ISRAELI POUND IS NOW LEGAL CURRENCY IN PLACE OF THE EGYPTIAN POUND IN THE OCCUPIED GAZA AREA. THE ARAB INHABITANTS HAVE BEEN ALLOWED TO RETAIN THEIR LOCAL CURRENCY BUT MUST USE ISRAELI MONEY IN BUSINESS TRANSACTIONS.

ISRAEL HAS AGREED TO HELP ARAB FARMERS, WHOSE FARM PRODUCE HAS BEEN PILING UP, AS THE OCCUPATION HAS SHUT OFF TRADITIONAL OUTLETS TO EGYPT AND JORDAN.

SOME OF THE PRODUCE -- PLUMS, TOMATOES, GRAPES, MELONS AND FIGS -- WILL BE MARKETED IN ISRAEL OR EXPORTED.

ISRAELI OFFICIALS SAY THE SURPLUSES BOUGHT FROM THE AREA FARMERS WILL BE GIVEN TO THE ISRAELI ARMY AND ALSO TO THE UNITED NATIONS RELIEF AND WORKS AGENCY FOR REFUGEES.
