  • Description

The people of Nairobi prayed for rain last week as the failure of the 'long rains' threatened a grave water crisis.

On Sunday (29 April) special services were held by different religious denominations throughout the city.

The National Christian Council arranged for a service, conducted by the Rev. Ian Paterson, at St. Andrews Church. Nairobi's Muslim community also prayed for an and to the crisis at the Jamia Mosque.

The Want Kenyan Highlands have a continuous rainy season from March to September, with maximums in May and August. These 'long rains' have so far failed to materialise, and have done so increasingly during recent years. This year the critical situation has led to strict water-rationing with reservoir only half-full. Lack of rain has also been a strong contributing factor to the death of many wild animals in game reserves throughout Kenya.
