  • Description

Two world records were broken during an international athletics meeting held in West Berlin on Friday evening (18 August). The meeting was part of the opening ceremony for the World Swimming Championships being held in the city. In the women's 400 metres hurdles, Poland's Krystyna Kacperczyk broke the old record when she won in 55.44 seconds. It was a performance missed by many in the crowd, and the by cameramen, as few of the stadium lights were switched on during the event.

SYNOPSIS: The meeting was held in the city's Olympic Stadium built for the 1936 Games. In the 1,000 metres, the East German girl, Ulrike Bruns recorded a world best performance in two minutes, 32 seconds.

Her performance was 0.65 seconds inside her own world best time which she set earlier this year.

In the men's 100 metres, the first two places went to Americans - Steve Williams in 10.21 seconds, with Clancy Williams second.

One of the closest finished came in the men's 400 metres, but Jerzy Pietrzyk of Poland managed to hold off the American Herman Frazier to finish in 46.28 seconds. Willy Smith of the United States was third.

Another victory for Poland came in the women's 100 metres with a victory for Grazyna Rabsztyn well clear of her team mate, Lucyna Langer.
